Treatment of Infertility

Infertility treatment should begin only after completion of the diagnostic workup of both partners. Infertility is complex and can be caused by many abnormalities in both the male and female. Thousands of dollars can be wasted on ineffective, subjective treatments in the absence of an accurate diagnosis.

There are several causes of infertility in the female which are typically divided into general categories. Each major category has numerous sub-categories which are discussed by our specialists. The major categories include:ovulatory dysfunction, ovarian disease, tubal disease, endometriosis, cervical disorders, uterine factor, and unexplained infertility.

In many cases, there are multiple causes of a couples infertility. For example, the female may have scarring from previous surgery(s) and endometriosis. Her partner could have a low sperm count or poor morphology. Treatment will not be successful unless all of these conditions are treated. This is why it is so critical that a specialist be seen early in the infertility evaluation.

Early evaluation is especially critical for women in the mid to late thirties. Female fertility is age related and can decline very rapidly. There may be little time for repeat cycles of "first line" therapies.

The links below point to discussions of each major cause of infertility. There are many infertility tests to diagnose each of these conditions. There are separate Web pages for each common test.
